Residents, businesses, and partners are invited to share their views on a new draft Film Classification Policy for Tewkesbury Borough.

The policy explains how the council would classify or reclassify films locally in specific circumstances, such as at a one-night event or a charity screening, where:

  • A film has not been certified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) and an exhibitor wishes to screen it locally, or
  • A cinema, distributor or exhibitor disagrees with the BBFC rating and asks the council to apply a different classification for screenings within the borough.

The online survey runs until Sunday, 31 May and is available online at: tewkesbury.gov.uk/consultation-on-draft-film-classification-policy

Anyone wishing to have a paper copy can contact the council’s Licensing team by email licensing@tewkesbury.gov.uk or telephone 01684 295010.

Councillor Murray Stewart, Lead Member for Environmental Services, said: “Most films shown publicly in Tewkesbury Borough already carry a classification from the British Board of Film Classification. However, on rare occasions, we may be asked to make or review a classification locally, and having a clear, agreed policy will help guide decision‑making in these situations.

“Feedback from this consultation will help shape the final policy before it is formally adopted and we’d encourage people to share their views.”
