About the volunteer litter picker scheme

Do you care enough about the environment in which you live to help keep it clean and tidy?

This initiative assists individual residents aged 18 or over who would like to carry out regular litter picks in an area they have nominated.

Volunteers are completely independent, but they can be confident that they are part of a large group of like-minded individuals, and with support provided by the council.

Volunteers are provided with appropriate equipment when a health and safety induction has been undertaken in return for committing to look after a particular area within the borough.

We currently have many volunteer litter pickers registered with the scheme. They all do a fantastic job which is very much appreciated.

If you would like to join the scheme you can register your interest on line and you will be contacted by an officer from Tewkesbury Borough Council who will have an informal chat and arrange a convenient time to do a health and safety induction to the scheme which will cover the do’s and don’ts required to keep you safe.

Please also see the volunteer guide and information relating to insurance cover:

Once you have had the induction and received your kit you are good to go.

Community litter picks

Community litter picks are for those wanting to organise or take part in one-off events.

If you, your town or parish council, school or local community group would like to carry out voluntary litter picking in the borough, then we can help you by providing litter picking tools and high visibility waistcoats. We can provide bags for the collection of litter as well as arrange for the litter collected to be disposed of after the event. For further information and assistance please make contact with us.

If you are organising a litter picking event it is important to remember that you are not covered by Tewkesbury Borough Council insurance, therefore please ensure you are adequately insured and a risk assessment is carried out and the controls required to cover the identified risks are made known to all involved in the event.

If equipment is required for your litter picking event please complete the Community litter picking scheme – equipment order form allowing two weeks minimum notice to ensure availability of the equipment.

Community charity events

Loan of bins to be used for events such as, fetes, fun runs, or other charity events are not part of the volunteer litter picking scheme but may be organised via contact with Tewkesbury Borough Council customer service team on: 01684 272364.

Weed and grounds clearance is not covered by this scheme – if you are undertaking a garden waste clearance please contact customer services to request loan of a garden waste bin.
