I have been remiss in writing my blog. I have missed a whole month. But as my year in office comes towards its end, I want to write some more thoughts for you.
I (and the Mayoress) have had an amazing time. I cannot pick out any one event and say that has been the highlight of the year. There have been so many wonderful experiences, it is quite impossible to compare them and put them in any sort of rank order. One thing I am quite clear about is that this is a unique borough, filled with extraordinary people who care for each other in a million different ways.
I have met people across the age ranges, from pre-school children to senior citizens more the 100 years old. I have visited schools and care homes. I have seen how various charitable organisations work and serve our people. I have been impressed with the enthusiasm and joie de vivre of the Young Farmers Club and the caring work of SSAFA. I have seen a little of the work that is done on our behalf by ARRC at Imjin Barracks, keeping us all safe and secure. I have chatted to members of the medical profession and applauded the success of students in schools, colleges and universities. We have a theatre in Tewkesbury, and I have enjoyed the music of the Tewkesbury Town Band, church music in the Abbey and also in parish churches. I have enjoyed the Churchdown Male Voice Choir. Libraries and Community Centres help to tie our communities together.
There have been solemn occasions, remembering those who have died in the armed forces and the police in service of our country, and happy times riding the dodgem cars at the Tewkesbury Mop Fair, village days in the sunshine and carols sung in unique and beautiful churches.
There are ordinary things as well; everyday work being done on our behalf by Tewkesbury Borough Council officers. This is the ongoing work of the council, and it has been my privilege as Mayor to chair the council Meetings. I shall never forget that honour.
