Mayor’s blog – 30 Sept 2024
The school holidays are usually quiet for mayoral events, but below are four ‘events’ that I have been involved with during August. For those that were able to get away, I hope you had a great summer holiday.
The Three Choirs Festival took place this year in Worcester. This festival is, believe it or not, the world’s longest-running music festival and dates back to 1715. It was an honour to represent our borough at this event, which started with a procession, headed by the Mayor of Worcester, proceeding from the Guild Hall to the cathedral, where the opening service took place. The cathedral was packed and as you can imagine, the sound was a truly uplifting experience.
The Battle of Evesham takes place annually and is similar in style to our own Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. The procession was impressive, and with great weather the good people of Evesham turned out in significant numbers to line the streets. The battle that is commemorated dates back to 1265, and a wreath was laid as part of the proceedings. As well as the mock battles, there were plenty of stalls to visit and food outlets. The Mayoress and I tried out some 13th century fare with, I have to say, some trepidation, however it turned out to be so good we had seconds!

It was my honour to present a Retirement Award Certificate to a Tewkesbury Borough Council retiree, namely Philip Grist. The presentation took place in the Mayor’s Parlour in front of a number of Philip’s work colleagues who vouched for the fact Philip had been a valuable part of the environmental health team. His humour is very infectious, even in a time of inevitable mixed emotions, so the event was peppered with plenty of laughter. I wish Philip all the best for a happy retirement.

Councillors Adcock and Mason took part in the annual bike riding event, now in its 39th year, called ‘Hell of the North Cotswolds’. As the name suggests, this is a particularly gruelling challenge. They wanted sponsors to support my Mayoral charities – Friends of Alderman Knight School and Severn Area Rescue Association. This was very generous of them and they actually achieved 50 kms! If you would like to make a donation, there is still time visit the Mayor’s webpage and tick the donate button!
