Councillor George Porter was invested as Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough at a ceremony held at Shurdington Community Centre on Tuesday, 12 May 2026.

Guests welcomed the new mayor at the ceremony, which included performances from Shurdington Community Choir and violinist Tetiana Hnilytska.

The mayor is the first citizen of the borough, and members of the council nominate a councillor each year to take on the role. The mayor chairs council meetings, represents the council at civic events and attends community engagements throughout the year.

Councillor Porter lives in Shurdington and represents the Shurdington Ward on the borough council.

Councillor Jill Smith was invested as Deputy Mayor for the year at the same ceremony.

Councillor Porter said: “It’s a privilege to take on the role of Mayor of Tewkesbury Borough, and I’m excited to work alongside our residents, champion local projects, and proudly represent our borough.

“During my term, I particularly want to use this important platform to advocate for and encourage young people in our borough, recognising their achievements and helping them become greater parts of their communities.”

Councillor Porter also went on to recognise Gloucestershire Federation of Young Farmers and Let’s Talk Well as his two chosen charities for the year.
