Mayor’s blog – March 2025
Blog time again from the Tewkesbury Borough Mayor!
Here are a selection of some of the events the Mayoress and I have had the pleasure of being part of.
Winchcombe School has been awarded a grant from the borough council for tree planting from the King’s Coronation Fund. We joined with the head teacher, other staff and a few pupils to plant an apple tree at the front of the school. This was part of a much bigger environmental project including tree planting at the school which, I have to say, was very impressive.

Tewkesbury Academy invited us to the play Down the Rabbit Hole, which is based on Alice in Wonderland. This was performed by the drama group, and was a fantastic production. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening, which culminated in a well-deserved standing ovation! The whole cast put so much into it and, while it’s unfair to pick anyone out in particular, ‘Alice’ was a particularly impressive lead role.

As Mayor, I occasionally support nearby Mayor’s charity events, so on 14 February we enjoyed a Valentines meal, where the food courses were interspersed by quizzes. Thank you to the Mayor of Evesham for the invite. We all know Valentines is often a cosy meal for two, but this made for a very different but fun evening!
The western region of the Showman’s Guild invited us to their annual lunch and award ceremony. This was a lovely event and it was great to chat with the showmen and women. We were on the same table as the Danter family, who are a significant part of the Tewkesbury Mop Fair, and they escorted me round last year’s Mop after the opening. Tewkesbury Borough is right at the north of the western region which covers fairs right down to Cornwall. Lovely people!

At the end of February, Tewkesbury Borough hosted a group of German students from Riesbach – the area we are twinned with. They spent several days in Tewkesbury, visiting local places of interest. Their last full day in the borough started in the council’s chamber with cakes and drinks, followed by a brief overview of what the council does. An afternoon trip on the river completed their day. Recognition must go to Chris and Mary Logwig, along with Kevin Cromwell, who do the hard work of making enjoyable visits like this happen.
