Recycling bring banks at the Bishop’s Cleeve Tesco site will be removed at the beginning of September due to overflowing bins, contamination with non-recyclable items, and fly-tipping.

Three bring banks were installed by Tewkesbury Borough Council in partnership with waste and recycling contractor Ubico, to encourage residents to recycle items such as glass, cans, plastic, cardboard and batteries, but the site has been blighted by ongoing issues.

Cllr Sarah Hands, Deputy Leader and Lead Member for Environmental Services, said: “It’s unfortunate that at the Bishop’s Cleeve bring bank site we’ve seen continued misuse and fly-tipping. With non-recyclable material like paint cans, general waste bags containing food and nappies being left at the site it means that despite Ubico’s best efforts, items become contaminated and cannot be sent for recycling.

‘’We have explored other venues to host the bring banks but unfortunately none of these were suitable. As no further businesses have come forward, we will remove the bring banks by Friday, 13 September.

‘’I encourage all residents to make full use of our convenient co-mingling blue recycling bins. For larger items, we have our bulky waste collection service and the county council’s Wingmoor Farm household recycling centre, which can accept a variety of materials.”

Alternatives to using bring banks to recycle items include supermarkets, which have in-store battery and ink cartridge recycling pods, as well as local charity shops for small electrical items, good quality textiles and shoes.

The Waste Wizard online tool can also help residents to find alternative ways to repair, reuse, recycle or dispose of household items – from bread bags, to electric toothbrushes to old paddling pools.

The removal of the council-owned bring banks does not affect the on-site Salvation Army Charity textiles and shoes bring bank, which is a private agreement between the charity and Tesco.

Ubico will clean the site once the banks have been removed. Waste left at the bring bank site after the banks have been removed will be classed as fly-tipping, which is illegal. Offenders may be prosecuted.

More information about recycling can be found on the council’s waste and recycling webpage or at Gloucestershire Recycles.
