Tewkesbury Borough Council has signed up to a county-wide planning agreement, committing to work jointly with other Gloucestershire local authorities on environmental issues and matters in connection with land use.

The Gloucestershire Statement of Common Ground (GSoCG) – which was prepared by the six local planning authorities in Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire County Council, and the GFirst Local Enterprise Partnership – was approved at a meeting of Full Council on Tuesday, 23 January.

In preparing their respective local plans, local authorities are required to work together on strategic, cross-boundary planning matters.

In response to this, the GSoCG includes a series of 37 high-level agreements dealing with issues such as addressing the climate and ecological emergencies, housing and economic needs, transport provision, and the natural environment.

The council signed up to a reduced version of the GSoCG in 2023, having opted out of certain environmental priorities. This week, the administration confirmed its commitment to the full document – including those aspects previously removed.

Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Built Environment, Councillor Mary Jordan, said: “By signing up to the Gloucestershire Statement of Common Ground, we are committing to work collaboratively with other local authorities on key planning matters.

“This agreement reflects our shared focus on addressing issues like the climate emergency, housing needs, and environmental concerns.

“By actively participating in this initiative, we aim to streamline strategic planning efforts and ensure effective cooperation among Gloucestershire’s local authorities.”
