Tewkesbury Borough Council will celebrate its Golden anniversary in April this year as the authority approaches 50 years since its formation in 1974.

Along with most local authorities in England and Wales, the council was officially formed in April 1974 following the Local Government Act of 1972.

The act restructured local government and reduced the number of councils in England from over 1,000 to just 412.

This significant milestone, which we share with many other borough councils, is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate 50 years of our borough, our communities, and the fabulous things we’ve achieved and look forward to during the next 50 years.

Residents, community groups and businesses are being asked to share their memories – we’d love to get a glimpse of Tewkesbury Borough through the years within your community. A commemorative collection of photographs of places, landscapes or public events taken from across the borough will be showcased in our residents’ magazine and online.

Interesting facts about the council

  1. The council once occupied each floor of the Public Services Centre. As service improvements have been made, our dedicated teams are proud to have the following as neighbours within our building: The Growth Hub, Job Centre, Gloucestershire Constabulary, Gloucestershire County Council’s Children and Families Services, Adult Services and One Legal.
  2. Tewkesbury Borough Council was one of the first authorities to introduce wheeled bins.
  3. The council owns The Roses Theatre building. Her Royal Highness Princess Anne attended the opening gala, which took place on 30 October 1975.
